How Listservs Work

When a question or comment is posted to the listserv, all members of the listserv will have access to the message and can follow the online discussion. You can choose what posts you read by opening any e-mail message that may interest you. If you choose to respond to a post, you can respond to the entire group of listserv members or to that individual alone, as appropriate.

Responding to Entire List vs. an Individual.  To respond to the whole list using most e-mail programs, simply choose "reply." You are successfully replying to the list if you see the address NationalCenterMember@yahoogroups.com in the "to" field. If you would like to respond to an individual, you must type that person's e-mail into the "to" field. Please be mindful of whom you are intending to respond to. It can be embarrassing to reply to the whole list when you don't intend the message to be read by everyone.

When to Respond to Entire List vs. an Individual
Please respond to the list when post will be beneficial to the whole list. If you read a question posted by someone else and you would like to read the responses, you may post "please post to the list" to encourage respondents to post replies to the entire list. If your response to another participant is a brief acknowledgement, such as "Thank you" or "I agree" or "Me, too," please respond directly to the original poster rather than the entire list.

Online Respect and Courtesy
Please do not post any defamatory, abusive, profane, threatening, offensive, or illegal material to the list. Be respectful of others' opinions and ideas. We expect that at times there will be robust discussion of diverse views, but anyone who disparages or harasses another person will be removed from the list. The listserv moderator reserves the right to end a discussion if it has taken an unproductive path or if the conversation has simply gone on too long with no new information being submitted.

Do not post commercial advertisements or personal solicitations to the list (e.g., posting résumés is not acceptable, but posting job opportunities is permitted). You may post information about trainings, conferences, and other resources only if directly related to crime victim assistance.

Do not post an article or information that does not directly relate to serving crime victims and their families or helping communities respond to and heal from crime. It is acceptable to post about issues relating to prevention of crime. If you are unsure if something is appropriate to post, feel free to ask the moderator at moderator@ncvc.org. Anyone who consistently posts inappropriate material will be removed from the list.

When You Are Away from Your E-mail
If you will be away from your e-mail for an extended period of time and are setting up an out-of-office auto-reply message, please follow the instructions below for turning off listserv message delivery.  If you do not take this step, everyone on the list may receive your auto-reply message each time a message is posted.  In this event, the moderator reserves the right to terminate your account.  You may reapply upon your return.

Instructions:  Go to the Yahoo Groups Web site at http://groups.yahoo.com.  Sign in with your username and password.  You will be directed to a page that shows the groups you have joined.  Click on "NationalCenterMember." On the next page, click on "edit membership," located on the upper left part of the page, above the "NationalCenterMember" banner.  Scroll down to "Step 2," click on "web only," and then click on "save changes," at the bottom of the page.  You may change this setting when you return.
