Emerging Childhood Victimization Issues

Monday, September 13, 2010
2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Children are one of the most highly victimized segments of the population. Current data reports that about one in three youth are victimized through either direct or indirect exposure to violence or neglect. This pre-conference Institute will provide an overview of cutting-edge research, best practice system responses, and evidence-supported interventions in various types of childhood victimization, and model a holistic multidisciplinary approach to understanding and addressing emerging childhood victimization issues. Through experiential learning exercises, national experts will guide participants in reframing common longstanding systemic beliefs about childhood exposure to victimization and to develop a new framework for addressing child and youth victimization in a more collaborative and effective way.

Heather A. Turner, PhD
Heather A. Turner is associate professor of sociology at the University of New Hampshire. She has a Bachelor of Arts in sociology from the University of Western Ontario and a PhD in human development and aging from the University of California, San Francisco. She is interested in the impact of social structure, stress and resources on mental health. Professor Turner's current research projects focus on gender differences in depression, the long-term and cumulative effects of childhood adversity on the mental health of adults, the role of social capital in the stress process, and the impact of juvenile victimization on child well-being. At the Crime Against Children Center, Dr. Turner is co-principal investigator (with David Finkelhor) on the Developmental Victimization Survey (DVS), a national study of 2,000 children age 2-17. The DVS is designed to estimate the incidence and distribution of a wide range of victimzation experiences, and to assess the impact of various forms of victimization on mental health outcomes.
