PROPERTY CRIME

  • In 2003, almost 10.5 million property offenses were reported to law enforcement.  These included 2.1 million burglaries, 7 million larceny-thefts, 1.3 million motor-vehicle thefts, and 64,043 arson offenses.81

  • Seventeen percent of property offenses were cleared* by law enforcement in 2003.82


    *Clearances can occur by arrest or by exceptional means when some element beyond law enforcement control precludes the placing of formal charges against the offender.
